Burgers: Burger Bros.

Came here for lunch a couple weeks ago based on proximity to work and other reviews. The burgers are fresh made like most places (that aren't fast food) and I've come to expect that. I am no burger connoisseur, but the burger was good. I've had better and I've had much worse. It's comparable to Five Guys, which is down the street. The burger patty itself is larger (thicker), but the toppings are just as fresh and delicious. I will say that I AM a potato connoisseur, especially french fries and these have nothing on Five Guys, Kooper's, or even GrrChe food truck. I can't say that I am a fan yet, but I will go back.

The Cowfish

The concept of this place is pretty brilliant! Burger bar, sushi bar, full bar? Don't mind if I do. You can take all of your friends to this place, even the ones that say, "I don't like sushi. I'm not eating raw fish," yet they've never tried a California roll. Someone mentioned on Yelp that the menu is pretty big. I agree its kind of outrageously large and that usually means lesser quality and a slower kitchen. I appreciate a restaurant that does a small menu phenomenally.

It took about 15 minutes (3 stops by the waitress) and finally her recommendation before I placed my order. I ordered the original cowfish bento box with a Philly roll, slider, sweet potato fries, edamame, and cucumber salad. The sweet potato fries were delicious and the cucumber salad is literally (the original definition, not the new ridiculous one) the best I've had at any sushi bar. Everything else was pretty basic and the service was pretty slow. They messed up my sister's order. My friend and I were nearly done eating by the time she got her meal. The manager brought it out and comp'ed it.

We ordered dessert too! A tower of lemon pound cake, ice cream, whipped cream, and berries. It was amazing. The three of us couldn't finish it! After dessert we waited for our check. We were chatting, but after 30 minutes or more we had to ASK for our check. The atmosphere was nice and maybe I'll try going at a less busy time before I make a final ruling on the service. I'll be back.

Day Five: Decisions, Decisions

The other day I mentioned I was craving cheeseburgers. Again Taste of Home came to the rescue with not one but two recipes to try. I couldn't decide between the them so I'm making small batches of both! I'll let you know how they come out!

Cheeseburger Chowder

Ingredients

1/2 lb ground beef
1 can condensed cheddar cheese soup, undiluted
1 3/4 cups milk
1 cup frozen shredded hash browns
1 can chopped green chilies
1 tbsp taco seasoning
1 tbsp dried minced onion
1/2 tsp chili powder

Prep

In a large saucepan, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in the soup, milk, potatoes, chilies, taco seasoning, onion and chili powder. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered for 5 minutes or until heated brought. Garnish with corn chips, cheese, and green onion if desired.

Cheeseburger Paradise Soup

Ingredients

3 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 small carrot, grated
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 jalapeƱo pepper, chopped (seeded for less heat)
1 qt beef broth
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/8 tsp pepper
1 pounds ground turkey
1/2 pound sliced fresh mushrooms
2 tbsp butter
2 cups milk, divided
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Prep

1 In a Dutch oven, combine the first nine ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes until potatoes are tender.
2 Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook beef and mushrooms in butter over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add to soup. Stir in 1 cup of milk; heat through.
3 In a small bowl, combine the flour and remaining milk until smooth; gradually stir into soup. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Reduce hear, stir in cheese until melted and serve garnished with crumbled bacon.

*Note: Season the meat like you would season your hamburger. I use seasoning salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder.

Dinner in the Park

All of my friends know how much I love Park Tavern at Piedmont Park. Birthdays, anniversaries, farewells, random Tuesday nights have been spent at this wonderful little place. The menu is always fresh and flavorful.

You can feel comfortable picking anything from their small yet diverse menu. From southwest egg rolls to mahi mahi you will not be disappointed and the prices are unbeatable for the quality.  Plus they have half price sushi everyday from 10pm to close, half price bottles of wine on Wednesday, and $1 drafts on rainy days!!!!

The bison burgers are made with fresh ground meat, seasoned, grilled to perfection, and topped with local and sustainable veggies.  while the sushi rolls are unique and fresh rolled. My favorite is the Dragon Roll, rolled with shrimp tempura, red pepper, cream cheese and green onions topped with grilled eel and crab. I get it almost every time I go to Park tavern or recommend it to anyone who goes.

I've tried almost everything on the menu, but since the last time I went they added a few new items so I chose the Big Bang Shrimp Tacos. One of my culinary pet peeves is tacos made with flour tortillas but I indulged anyway. The tortillas were stuffed with crispy fried shrimp and served with fresh pico de gallo and a chipotle cream sauce. Expectantly delicious, my only complaint is that there were only 2 and not the typical trio of tacos.

Another must order is the sangria. Skip the glass and get the carafe! I do and I promise you won't regret it. Just be careful standing up after! What are you waiting for? Go!

Every Kid's Favorite

As many times as I have been to food truck gatherings, I've never tried one that's always there: GrrChe! Grilled cheese at its finest. I wanted a burger on a budget so I opted for the cheese burger grill with fresh handcut fries. You can choose your fixings. I kept it simple with grilled onion and tomato. The texas toast it was served on was delicious and the cheddar was ooey and gooey. The two most important ingredients for a grilled cheese truck were top notch. The burger patty was a little over cooked but big and seasoned nicely. I'd order it again. Btw, I love that they have a Coca Cola fountain on the truck, I'm tired of Pepsi products!
